Why Your Changeup Isn't Working — And How to Fix the Tunnel

A changeup only works if it comes out of the same tunnel as your fastball. If hitters can pick it up early, you might as well throw it into a trash can. Here's how to make yours disappear.
The Tunnel: What It Is and Why It Matters
The "tunnel" is the imaginary window through which all your pitches must travel before they diverge. Elite pitchers create the illusion that every pitch is a fastball until it's too late for the hitter to adjust. Your changeup, curveball, and slider should all look like fastballs through the tunnel — the separation happens after the decision point.
The Grip Doesn't Matter As Much As You Think
Everyone asks about grips. Circle change, palm ball, vulcan grip — it doesn't matter if your arm speed drops when you throw it. The grip is secondary. Arm speed is everything. If your arm slows down when you throw a changeup, hitters pick it up immediately. Train the grip second. Train the arm speed first.
Release Point Consistency
Your changeup should come out of the exact same arm slot as your fastball. I spent an entire fall at Georgia State working on nothing but release point consistency between my two-seam and changeup. Video analysis was essential — your feel and what's actually happening are often completely different things.
